Baseball,  Not the MLB

Not the MLB: Naranjeros de Hermosillo

Let’s get back to looking at cool teams that aren’t in Major League Baseball. The “Not the MLB” series is a sequel to my “Not the NFL” series where I built a football league based exclusively on cool uniforms and helmets from teams that weren’t in the NFL. So with Not the MLB, we’re building a baseball league of awesome looking baseball teams that aren’t in Major League Baseball.  Our first two teams were Korea’s Changwan NC Dinos and the NPB’s Tokyo Yakult Swallows.

Joining the league from Mexico and looking at los Naranjeros de Hermosillo, the Hermosillo Oranges.

Team: Hermosillo Naranjeros
Hometown: Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico
League: Mexican Pacific League
Years: 1958 – present
Stadium: Estadio Sonora
LMB Championships: 7 (most recent: 2015)
Caribbean Series Champions: 1976, 2014

The Naranjeros are the most successful team in the history of the Mexican Pacific League. 15 LMP titles and two from the Liga Invernal de Sonora as the Hermosilo Queliteros. In ’76 Hermosillo became the first Mexican team to win the Caribbean Series.

The team had to wait until 2013-14 for their second Caribbean championship, defeating Puerto Rico’s Indios de Mayaguez 7-1 in the championship game. 2014 saw Cuba’s return to the Caribbean Series for the first time since 1960.

The reason we’re bringing Hermosillo into our dope logo league is easy: they’re the Oranges. It’s a great, and unique team name. It would have been easy to go full Brandiose and get real gross with their logo. But a cartoon face on an orange is exactly right. Their traditional hat logo is a really simple orange H on black. Another great choice when they could have gone way overboard.

The team’s uniform set features a home, road and 2 home alt options. The basic road greys are just a shade brighter than the new Arizona Diamondbacks look, with black pinstripes and black sleeves. The alts are black & orange images of each other, all four sets featuring the Naranjeros wordmark across the front. The one and only and massive knock is the overabundance of adverts on the jersey, the pants, possibly tattooed across shoulder blades of bat boys and bullpen catchers.

The white/grey/black/orange balance is perfect, and in our Not the MLB league, the sponsor logos will be unnecessary, helping them clean up their already well done uniform sets.
